This is a vital component that goes hand in hand with SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Here are a few tips to help with your SEM:

1. Content is king

You’ve heard this before. You need to have good content and update your site on a regular basis, right ? Wrong!

By making content the king, you are supposed to generate excellent and unique content that can be found nowhere else but in your site!

Make sure your site, which is your principal product and service, is outstanding: that’s a primary rule in marketing, even search engine marketing.

2. Be unique. Have a voice!

The last thing readers want is a blog or a site that has no sense of personality, talks in a very technical manner, does not relate with the audience, and… I can continue forever, but that will just lull you to sleep!

What I mean is that you have to be personal, inject humor in your valuable content (if your niche is all about health and fitness, maybe you can share an anecdote or two; don’t be afraid to draw from your hilarious experiences!), and ask them questions. Yes, questions. You’ll be surprised at how much feedback you’ll get by asking a provocative question.

3. Don’t advertise in sites. Guest post in blogs!

When was the last time you clicked on an ad? You can’t even remember, yes? That’s because even if you click on ads, the chances that it will leave a positive impression on you is very, very small. Now, on the flipside, consider guest posting.

If you get a shot at posting on another popular blog, talk about the niche topic and offer valuable content to the popular blog’s readers, and include a short link of your site, that will certainly drive traffic to your site and to your niche product or service.

4. Exchange links with other blogs and websites relevant to your niche

Networking is a crucial part of search engine marketing. Choose the blogs that are likewise interesting. By exchanging links with them, you are basically expanding the readers of your site.

The number of sites linking to your site is also a way to increase page rank. The higher your Page Rank is, the higher your site will be in the Google search engine results.

5. Build your site design around SEO

Assuming that you already know the basic rules of SEO, you should be able to wrap the design of your blog or site around these rules. Make sure that the codes of your site have meta links, meta tags, and page titles.

You may think these are no longer important, but they still play key role in the search engine marketing of your site. They may be inconspicuous, but they’re just as important.

6. Concentrate on main keywords and latent semantic indexing

With powerful keyword research tools, you should be able to find the best keyword phrases for your site. The best keywords are not necessarily the highly searched ones, but the moderately searched phrases that have relatively low results. It’s much easier to penetrate these keywords and rank high if you work your way around it.

7. Don’t overdo your keyword density

Although keyword density is and remains to be an important aspect of search engine marketing, overdoing it is the last thing you want to do.

Having a keyword density of 2% to 4% is ideal if you don’t want to be labeled as spammy by search engines. Get some help for checking your keyword density here.

8. Think twice about blocking your domain ownership

When you register for a domain name, you have the option of making your contact details private. While this is a choice you’re free to make, you might want to think twice about it.

Google, among other search engines, might associate your domain with spam. Not only do you automatically get blacklisted, you also get a lot less benefits and disadvantages than you deserve.

9. Monitor regularly

You might be the undisputed king of SEO today, but will you still be the same tomorrow? That will most certainly not be the case.

For that, like every responsible search engine marketing expert, you should always monitor where you stand in the rankings. Check how many comments and linkbacks you’ve received. And, whatever happens, don’t break your monitoring schedule!

10. Leverage social media

We’re no longer in the olden Internet times – and that’s a good thing! Now, there are innumerable ways for you to perform search engine marketing, including getting a little help with social media.

Synchronize your site with your social networking sites and be surprised at how many impressions you get from your network and your friends’ network!

With these ten powerful search engine marketing tips, you can consider your site or blog covered. However, these aren’t steps that you can simply do once. You have to follow them through and through in order to have that high-ranking site you need for online moneymaking.

Depending on who you speak to, search engine optimization (SEO) is either largely influenced or not at all influenced by social media. I’m sure everyone has their own opinions, case studies, and sites that show greater or lesser correlations between their social media engagement levels and their natural search results.

If you were to carry out an investigation into whether social media was a big influencing factor, which metrics would you want to monitor in order to base your insights on more empirical data?

I’ve put together a list of 13 ranking factors below. Feel free to use these and any others you can get your grubby SEO mitts on!

Twitter

1. Number of Followers

You’ll need your own corporate Twitter feed, which brings its own problems around brand protection and also the potential for dealing with customer service enquiries, but the more followers you have, the more authoritative your Twitter persona and the more value will be associated with your URL (assuming you have remembered to link to it).

2. Quality of Followers

The best followers are the ones with their own communities of followers. The more high value people who follow you, and retweet your stuff, the better.

3. Relevance of Followers

It’s one thing getting followed and retweeted by Stephen Fry with over a million followers, but it’s also important to get the same response from accounts that are more specific to your industry. Someone with “fashion” in their description who retweets your “20 percent off the new spring collection” offer is equally valuable.

4. Number of Retweets

Most likely as a ratio of tweets to retweets — the more your content is reproduced by others the more authoritative it is. Obviously the more followers you have, the more likely you are to be retweeted. However, it isn’t just about retweeting other people’s content or dishing out promotions. It’s about engaging in conversation with people in the industry.

Facebook

5. Number of Fans

You’ll need to create your own corporate profile on Facebook, which brings the same potential banana skins as a corporate Twitter feed, only multiplied numerous times due to the sheer level of engagement of people on Facebook. However, if you decide to engage with customers and potential customers on Facebook, the total number of likes your page receives will add value to your URL.

6. Number of Comments

A large number of likes, but little engagement, is a sure sign of someone gaming the system. People will tend to like you if you talk to them. Successful Facebook pages include a lot of content written by other people.

Youtube

7. Number of Views

An obvious one, but any content you upload to YouTube should link to your site in the description, and the more times it is viewed, the more value will be attributed to your video.

8. User Comments

YouTube is also about engaging with other YouTubers and commenting on popular videos. The more you comment, the more link juice is passed back to your profile.

9. References From Independent Profiles

Using YouTube can bring in some really good authority if done brilliantly — if your link from your video passes some value, imagine how much more value would be passed if you could get other people to parody your work and include links to you from their profiles. The prime example remains the Cadbury’s Gorilla, but there are lots of interesting mini-campaigns trying to leverage the above.

10. Title of Video

Any references to your target keywords in the title of the video will help ensure that any authority passed will be relevant to a specific theme. Keywords should also be in the tags and or transcript where possible.

11. Percent of Likes vs. Dislikes

Easy one. The more liked your content is, the more authoritative it is.

12. Positive vs. Negative Brand Mentions (All Social Media)

Use a tool like Radian6, or a free tool, and ensure that you have significantly more positive brand mentions than negative. It won’t be 100 percent accurate as these things don’t pick up on sarcasm. But Google has already made investment in this area in 2011, so it’s well worth monitoring.

13. Number of Social Mentions (All Potential Media)

Total visibility across all social media shows that your content is important to all people and not just a result of a large special offer for Facebook/Twitter users. HowSociable is a simple way of giving yourself a rating here.

30five uses an integrated approach towards getting great results on the internet and mobile platforms. The key is to have your website and other platforms i.e social media, blog, email newsletters, sms, Youtube videos all interlinked and working together to reach a broad based target market. Before your set up your platform, it is important to define your product and understand your target market and create a clear message. Once you know what you want to express to your target audience, then it is important to choose the right platforms. So essentially, Step 1 would be to create a clear brand identity and Step 2 would be to create a clear brand message. It is important to know who you are, what you offer and who you’re offering it to. Once you have this, you can create an online marketing strategy. Once you understand this, you need to choose your channels: mobile, search engines, youtube, social media, email and develop the devices and strategies to work in these channels.

Below are some aspects to focus on, when creating an online marketing strategy.

1) Creating a Website

When creating a website, there are a few basic things to take into consideration:

- Choosing the right platform. This is vital, as you want to choose a platform with CMS capabilities. You want to be able to edit the site at will, like updating content, changing pictures, etc. A CMS website would be highly recommended.

- Google Optimization. For Google and other search engines to find your site quicker and easier, it is very important for your site to have clean code. Including site maps also helps with finding your site in a Google Search.

- Add a Blog. By adding a blog, it means adding more content to your site which improves your ranking. Google will rank your site better if you have good titles to your blog posts and rich, informative relevant content.

- Have a SEO Tool. When creating your site, you need to take into consideration keywords that search engines pick up. You need a SEO tool which allows you to adjust certain things in your site, such as permalinks, page and site titles, and anchor text.

- Have a good Design. As people don’t usually stay long on one page at a time, a design which is clean, appealing and easy to navigate through will make the visitor stay that much longer on your site. For that same reason, a site containing images, icons and limited text is more likely to be visited than one which is content heavy. A very important factor is to have a clear call to action on your site for whatever the purpose of your site is.

30five specializes in WordPress, creating websites that allows the client to easily edit their content, updating the website at any time.

2) Adding a Blog

A blog can be a vital tool, as you can create dynamic content on your site, with rich titles, images, etc, which can help with your ranking. It is recommended to follow other blogging sites in order to drive up your traffic.

The blog should be informative, telling the reader a bit more about your product or any interesting news in your respected field. It should also lead the reader to your site. 30five can create a comprehensive blog site that’s both aesthetically appealing as well as functional and easy to navigate through.

3) Social Networks

Define what social media platforms work best for you. Don’t be afraid to experiment until you get it right. This is a relatively new field and you need to find out what works best with your product. The key is to be authentic and offer something of value and have a point of interest; find ways of being different and entertaining. Offer value through competitions, specials, helpful information, etc. Remember to connect to other social media and have a presence. The key ones at the moment would be Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. 30five is a specialist in setting up a campaign in all of these social networks.

4) Email Marketing

Marketing via email is a tricky matter. It is powerful, but easily abused. It is easy, but really difficult.

Address Recipients with Their Name in Email Campaigns.
Make your newsletter recipients feel more like themselves, less like mere numbers by greeting them individually and personally.

Avoid $$$ Signs in Email Marketing Campaigns.

Avoid Email Marketing During the Holidays
Holidays are often holidays from email, too. That’s why email marketing during the holidays is often not very effective.

Create a Clear Call to Action in Email Marketing Campaigns
Make sure recipients of your email marketing message know what you expect them to do (and what they can expect in return).

Emphasize with Words, Not Exclamation Marks in Your Copy
The path to successful email marketing is not paved with exclamation marks.

Experiment with Link Placement in Newsletters
Maximize performance by putting the right links in the right places.

Learn from Spam
Spammers can teach you a lot about email marketing.

Use Your Name in the From: Line
People don’t like to read mail from strangers or robots. But messages From: a name they know and trust are welcome.

5) Search Engine Marketing

This is a vital component that goes hand in hand with SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Here are a few tips to help with your SEM:

- Content is king
- Be unique. Have a voice!
- Don’t advertise in sites. Guest post in blogs!
- Exchange links with other blogs and websites relevant to your niche
- Build your site design around SEO

Every aspect of your wedding offers the opportunity for using unique, personalised ways of incorporating your identities. Wedding photo books are no different. Couples are being encouraged to be innovative and creative when putting their wedding photo book together, so that it is meaningful and special for them.

The following suggestions are just a few novel options:

Guest Signing Photo Book

Have a pre-wedding photo shoot and then compile these into a photo book. Include lots of white areas in which wedding guests can leave their messages during the course of your reception. This is a very special keepsake as each of the valued guests that made an effort to attend your celebration can leave a personal, heartfelt message. The photographs can be those of you as a couple, just having fun (in a park or around town), or formal engagement photographs.

Photo Story Book – Wedding Photo Book

Tell the story of your wedding day, from beginning to end, in a series of gorgeous photographs. This requires very clear two-way communication with your photographer so that he or she understands your requirements and can ensure that they have all of the images necessary to convey the mood and progression of your big day. Include a combination of black & white, colour and sepia photographs, and try to make them as personal as possible, so that the true ambience and emotions of the day are imparted through images. With this you can create a fantastic photo book to cherish this wonderful day.

Celebrity Autograph Photo book

Make your guests feel as glamorous as you do by compiling an autograph photo book . Have one or more photographs of each guest and a place next to it in which they should write a personal message. This will make them feel extra special, as you have made an effort to include them in your celebrations in such a major way, and will help you to remember all of the special family and friends that were there on this day.

Guest Pages in your Photo book

Include a photograph with place to write a message in each wedding invitation. Ask your guests to write their personal note to you on there and bring it to your reception. After your big day, compile these into a photo book. The photographs can be of you, as a couple, of the guest to whom you sent the invite or of memorable times with family and friends.

Design Options

We offer a range of book choices, ranging from A4 landscape, 30cm x 30cm or A3 landscape. We also recommend a custom hardcover with a beautiful picture of your choice on the cover.

Stop Google seeing months and days as keywords for your site

This is a surprisingly common problem, although many people aren’t aware they even have it. Sign up/log into Google’s Webmaster Tools and check out the top keywords list. If you’re seeing months of the year in that list, then it’s time to get rid of them. Even if you aren’t following a specific keyword strategy, it’s a good idea to minimise the date keywords that show up because, as a general rule, they are of no real value.
Tips for getting rid of date keywords:
Check your theme to see if each comment’s date is a link; if so, change it to just text.
Removing any bolding and H title tags from date terms (both within your entries and your comments).
Avoid using months and other date-related terms in your post titles, categories and tags.
Review your blog archive presentation. If you’re displaying a large list of links in months on every page of your site, think about an alternative solution for showing archives – perhaps just as a simple link ‘Archives’ through to your links that just appears on the homepage.
Try displaying your dates entirely in numerical form – but be aware that this may confuse international visitors.
Optimise your page titles

Again, duplicate content can be an issue here, particularly if you use the Post Title, Site Name structure which is so common with WordPress installations. All in One SEO Pack gives you the option to name your page titles accordingly, but you should also ensure that you use a variety of different keywords for best results.
It’s worth checking in Webmaster Tools, as if Google sees your site as having problematic page titles then it will be clearly flagged. You can also:
Manually write page titles to make sure they’re unique
Limit the length of titles, choosing the most important keywords
Avoid the temptation to keyword-stuff – remember that a page title is one of the main factors in a searcher deciding your page is relevant to them and use phrases that make sense rather than just lists of words
Support page titles with relevant content on the page, and include all the keywords you used in your title
Optimise your tags

Tags can be useful for both visitors and SEO as long as you use them carefully and consistently.
Make sure you have tags for all the keywords and phrases you want to target.
Try to restrict the number of tags you have – particularly if you display a tag cloud on your website – to narrow your focus.
Review your tags on a regular basis, and remove any which are unused or unsuccessful.
Check that you don’t unintentionally have any topic tags repeated due to plurals (e.g. ‘blog’ and ‘blogs’).
Increase the speed of your WordPress website

Since April 2010, Google has also started taking into account the speed of your website for search rankings. Improve your website’s speed by:
Using WP Super Cache to reduce the server’s workload.
Keeping your database optimised with Yoast’s Optimize DB plugin.
Reviewing your theme’s code, condensing where possible.
Make sure any images you use are optimised for the web.
Deleting anything you stop using, including images, themes and plugins. (Be careful though – make regular backups and think twice before deleting a well-ranked page).
Amalgamating all your theme’s CSS into one file, and all your JavaScript into another to reduce web server requests.
Going through your site thoroughly and removing the old lines of code, images and other bits and pieces that deleted themes and plugins may have left behind.
You can track how fast your pages perform using Webmaster Tools and Firefox’s Page Speed Plugin.
Avoid duplicate content being indexed

Once you factor in tags, categories and archives for a single post, that’s already several pages with duplicate content. To prevent this, you can use the nofollow attribute on internal links to categories, tags and your archives.

30five does web design in Cape Town and is a wordpress specialist. Here are some tips to assist in improving your conversion rate.

Contact 30five if you require web design assistance.

5 areas to check when cleaning up your website

1. Have a plan for every page.

Every page that you publish should have a purpose. There has to be a reason for being and you have to tell the visitor what to do next. If you’re not certain what role the page plays in your business you can’t expect a visitor to do what you want them to do.

2. Take your visitor by the hand.

Have your content read in such a way that what you suggest in the call to action appears to be the logical next step. For example if they land on an opt-in page their next action should be a sign up not paging back to achieved articles.

3. Make it clean and simple.

Keep your page design clutter free. Sometimes a simple white background and black text along with an engaging header graphic is all you need.

4. Tell them what you want to do.

I said every page has to have a purpose and to follow up on that, you have to tell your visitor just what that purpose is by including a strong, compelling call to action. Build your case with content and then direct them to the next logical step with the call to action.

5. Don’t eliminate all of your social media links.

Social media is very useful in getting new, referred traffic from your visitors. However it can also be a distraction and you have to weigh the benefits and risk. As a general rule, use social media in moderation. It’s better to keep the reader on the page and following your calls to action than going off on a Tweet or Facebook binge.
But wait there’s more!

One last tip but it’s an important one. People read left to right.

Here’s a fact. When visitors land on your page their eyes will immediately focus on the top left of your page. Your most important content should be parked there, not a sidebar like so many sites have.

This clean up strategy can work for any website from infrared cameras to e-books on relationships to video tutorials on golf to router table reviews. And the format of the site doesn’t matter either. You can use them on review sites, daily deal sites or even on your blog.

Take the challenge and check out just how many “options” a visitor has on your site and get rid of stuff that is detracting from your message.

When launching a website, you can often forget a number of things in your eagerness to make it live, so it’s useful to have a checklist to look through as you make your final touches and before you announce your website to the world.

This article reviews some important and necessary checks that web-sites should be checked against before the official launch — little details are often forgotten or ignored, but – if done in time – may sum up to an overall greater user experience and avoid unnecessary costs after the official site release.

Favicon

A favicon brands the tab or window in which your website is open in the user’s browser. It is also saved with the bookmark so that users can easily identify pages from your website. Some browsers pick up the favicon if you save it in your root directory as favicon.ico, but to be sure it’s picked up all the time, include the following in your head.

Titles And Meta Data

Your page title is the most important element for SEO and is also important so that users know what’s on the page. Make sure it changes on every page and relates to that page’s content.

Meta description and keyword tags aren’t as important for SEO (at least for the major search engines anyway), but it’s still a good idea to include them. Change the description on each page to make it relate to that page’s content, because this is often what Google displays in its search result description.

Cross-Browser Checks

Just when you think your design looks great, pixel perfect, you check it in IE and see that everything is broken. It’s important that your website works across browsers. It doesn’t have to be pixel perfect, but everything should work, and the user shouldn’t see any problems. The most popular browsers to check are Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8, Firefox 3, Safari 3, Chrome, Opera and the iPhone.

Proofread

Read everything. Even if you’ve already read it, read it again. Get someone else to read it. There’s always something you’ll pick up on and have to change. See if you can reduce the amount of text by keeping it specific. Break up large text blocks into shorter paragraphs. Add clear headings throughout, and use lists so that users can scan easily. Don’t forget about dynamic text too, such as alert boxes.

Links

Don’t just assume all your links work. Click on them. You may often forget to add “http://” to links to external websites. Make sure your logo links to the home page, a common convention.

Also, think about how your links work. Is it obvious to new users that they are links? They should stand out from the other text on the page. Don’t underline text that isn’t a link because it will confuse users. And what happens to visited links?

Functionality Check

Test everything thoroughly. If you have a contact form, test it and copy yourself so that you can see what comes through. Get others to test your website, and not just family and friends but the website’s target market. Sit back and watch how a user uses the website. It’s amazing what you’ll pick up on when others use your website differently than how you assume they’d use it. Common things to check for are contact forms, search functions, shopping baskets and log-in areas.

Graceful Degradation

Your website should work with JavaScript turned off. Users often have JavaScript turned off for security, so you should be prepared for this. You can easily turn off JavaScript in Firefox. Test your forms to make sure they still perform server-side validation checks, and test any cool AJAX stuff you have going on.

Validation

You should aim for a 100% valid website. That said, it isn’t the end of the world if your website doesn’t validate, but it’s important to know the reasons why it doesn’t so that you can fix any nasty errors. Common gotchas include no “alt” tags, no closing tags and using “&” instead of “&amp;” for ampersands.

RSS Link

If your website has a blog or newsreel, you should have an RSS feed that users can subscribe to. Users should be able to easily find your RSS feed: the common convention is to put a small RSS icon in the browser’s address bar.

Put this code between your <head> tags.

Analytics

Installing some sort of analytics tool is important for measuring statistics to see how your website performs and how successful your conversion rates are. Track daily unique hits, monthly page views and browser statistics, all useful data to start tracking from day 1. Google Analytics is a free favorite among website owners. Others to consider are Clicky, Kissmetrics (still in closed beta yet), Mint and StatCounter.

Sitemap

Adding a sitemap.xml file to your root directory allows the major search engines to easily index your website. The file points crawlers to all the pages on your website. XML-Sitemaps automatically creates a sitemap.xml file for you. After creating the file, upload it to your root directory so that its location is www.mydomain.com/sitemap.xml.

If you use WordPress, install the Google XML Sitemaps plug-in, which automatically updates the sitemap when you write new posts. Also, add your website and sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools. This tells Google that you have a sitemap, and the service provides useful statistics on how and when your website was last indexed.

Defensive Design

The most commonly overlooked defensive design element is the 404 page. If a user requests a page that doesn’t exist, your 404 page is displayed. This may happen for a variety of reasons, includinganother website linking to a page that doesn’t exist. Get your users back on track by providing a useful 404 page that directs them to the home page or suggests other pages they may be interested in.

Another defensive design technique is checking your forms for validation. Try submitting unusual information in your form fields (e.g. lots of characters, letters in number fields, etc.) and make sure that if there is an error, the user is provided with enough feedback to be able to fix it.

Optimize

You’ll want to configure your website for optimal performance. You should do this on an ongoing basis after launch, but you can take a few simple steps before launch, too. Reducing HTTP requests, using CSS sprites wherever possible, optimizing images for the Web, compressing JavaScript and CSS files and so on can all help load your pages more quickly and use less server resources.

Besides, depending on the publishing engine that you are using, you may need to consider taking more specific measures – for instance, if you are using WordPress, you may need to consider useful caching techniques to speed up the performance.

Back Up

If your website runs off a database, you need a back-up strategy. Or else, the day will come when you regret not having one. If you use WordPress, install WordPress Database Backup, which you can set up to automatically email you backups.

Print Style Sheet

If a user wants to print a page from your website, chances are she or he wants only the main content and not the navigation or extra design elements. That’s why it is a good idea to create a print-specific style sheet. Also, certain CSS elements, such as floats, don’t come out well when printed.

To point to a special CSS style sheet that computers automatically use when users print a page, simply include the following code between your <head> tags.
